An icebreaker is the first ever speech for all new members who join toastmasters. The guidelines for the icebreaker speech are mentioned in the toastmaster manuals, but for the people who search for more than guidelines; following are some tips to make your icebreaker more interesting.

Prepare yourself!
The icebreaker is all about self-introduction to the audience, but this should not be a normal self-introduction, so you need to prepare. You must first read the ice breaker guidelines in the manual and understand the speech objectives. You need to find the key points and limit yourself to the given time limit.

Organize yourself!
Plan the things you’re going to talk about in your icebreaker; it’s always better to write down the points and structure it accordingly. If you think you’ll forget some stuff during the speech, prepare some cue cards which you can take to your speech.

Make it interesting!
Icebreaker speakers are sometimes unsure about what to talk about in a speech, so it becomes just another self-introduction. Yes, ice breakers are a self-introduction, but try to make it interesting. Normally, the speaker will start by telling his/her name and what he/she does currently etc. but this way might not engage listeners. A good way is to start your speech with an important life event or a story.

Challenge your fears!
With first time speakers, there is always some fear about how the audience will react to what you say and fear of making errors in the speech. But this is your icebreaker so don’t think too much about the mistakes, because those mistakes will make you a better speaker in the future. This does not mean you should make the same mistakes continuously, but if you do make mistakes, don’t think too much about it because you can always fix them later.

Practice makes perfect!
As humans we need practice for almost everything we do, so for your icebreaker, you need to do a little bit of practice. After organizing the content just do one or two practice sessions and check your timing. If your timing is over the recommended time just cut down some content and practice once more, if you can, practice with a friend. However, remember not to overdo it!

Good luck!
